In the very heart of the Eisch Valley, nestled among Luxembourg’s green hills, stands Château d’Ansembourg — a true architectural gem with a history dating back to the 17th century.

The castle was built between 1639 and 1647 as the residence of Thomas Bidart, a master ironworker from Dinant in the Belgian Ardennes. Seeking to develop the iron and steel industry in the region, Bidart established operations in Ansembourg. His original residence, which served as the forge master’s home, still stands today and forms the central part of the château.
Zamek powstał w latach 1639–1647 jako rezydencja Thomasa Bidarta, mistrza hutniczego z Dinant w belgijskich Ardenach. Bidart, chcąc rozwinąć przemysł żelazny i stalowy, rozpoczął działalność w Ansembourgu. Jego pierwotny dom, pełniący funkcję kuźniczej siedziby, przetrwał do dziś i stanowi centralny element zamku.
Over the generations, the estate evolved in step with the ambitions of its owners. In 1719, Thomas de Marchant began transforming the modest dwelling into a grand palace. His son, Lambert-Joseph de Marchant et d’Ansembourg, infused the estate with a unique character. Between 1730 and 1750, he created the baroque gardens that survive to this day, featuring paths, fountains, and an extraordinary collection of sculptures. The most intriguing of these is the so-called mythological avenue, rich in symbolism and allegory. In recognition of his accomplishments, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria granted Lambert-Joseph the noble title of Count in 1749 — an honor that perfectly complemented the château’s majestic beauty.

Jego syn, Lambert-Joseph de Marchant et d’Ansembourg, nadał budowli unikalny charakter. W latach 1730–1750 założył on barokowe ogrody, które przetrwały do dziś – z alejkami, fontannami i niezwykłym zespołem rzeźb, z których najbardziej intrygująca jest tzw. aleja mitologiczna, pełna symboliki i alegorii. W 1749 roku cesarzowa Maria Teresa Austriacka uhonorowała Lamberta-Josepha tytułem hrabiego – godnością, która doskonale współgrała z majestatycznym obliczem rezydencji.
Today, Ansembourg is a truly special place, set in the picturesque landscape of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The Eisch Valley — known since the 19th century as the “Valley of the Seven Castles” — was carved out of Luxembourg sandstone dating back to the Triassic period. It is now a protected area at both the national and European levels.

Dolina Eisch – znana od XIX wieku jako „Dolina Siedmiu Zamków” – została wyrzeźbiona w piaskowcu luksemburskim pochodzącym z okresu triasu. Jest to teren objęty ochroną zarówno na poziomie krajowym, jak i europejskim.
The château has undergone many transformations. Following the French Revolution, in the 19th century, the de Marchant et d’Ansembourg family relocated to Belgium, and the estate became a hunting lodge. In the 20th century, the building fell into disrepair until it was acquired in 1986 by the Japanese religious organization Sukyo Mahikari. Intensive restoration efforts began, breathing new life into the historic structure. Original features such as staircases and decorative elements were uncovered and meticulously restored. The renovation of the oldest, central building was led by architect Ngoma Madoki.
Zamek przechodził liczne przemiany. Po rewolucji francuskiej, w XIX wieku, rodzina de Marchant et d’Ansembourg przeniosła się do Belgii, a posiadłość zaczęła pełnić funkcję pawilonu myśliwskiego. W XX wieku budowla popadła w ruinę, a w 1986 roku została zakupiona przez japońską organizację religijną Sukyo Mahikari. Rozpoczęto wówczas intensywne prace renowacyjne, które przywróciły zamkowi jego dawny blask. Odkryto m.in. oryginalne schody i ozdoby, które pieczołowicie odrestaurowano. Za odnowienie najstarszej części – centralnego budynku – odpowiadał architekt Ngoma Madoki.
The gardens of Château d’Ansembourg are its true soul. Romantic pathways invite leisurely strolls, fountains whisper stories of the past, and mythological sculptures create a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Every corner of the garden echoes the dreams and passion of its creators. The botanical variety is equally impressive, with a vast rose collection, ancient apple trees, and one of the longest hornbeam alleys in the country, stretching along the Eisch River. Of particular note are the historical labyrinths, carefully reconstructed based on original plans.

Château d’Ansembourg also thrives as a cultural venue. Each year, it hosts the “Fête du Château” festival, drawing large crowds. During the 33rd edition in 2023, visitors participated in art workshops, sampled cuisine from around the world, and toured the celebrated gardens. Proceeds from the event supported environmental initiatives.
Château d’Ansembourg to również miejsce tętniące kulturą. Co roku odbywa się tu festiwal „Fête du Château”, przyciągający tłumy gości. Podczas 33. edycji w 2023 roku odwiedzający mogli wziąć udział w warsztatach artystycznych, skosztować potraw z różnych stron świata i zwiedzić słynne ogrody. Dochód z wydarzenia wspierał inicjatywy ekologiczne.
The Eisch Valley, home to the château, features a scenic tourist route connecting seven medieval castles. Among them, Château d’Ansembourg stands out as one of the most beautiful and best-preserved.
