While strolling through the Parco della Neapolis (the Neapolis Archaeological Park) in Sicily, I came across beautiful classical sculptures perfectly integrated into the park’s surroundings. These sculptures caught my eye because they seemed familiar to me. I felt like I had seen them somewhere before – especially the heads wrapped as if in bandages. Upon closer inspection, I realized they were by none other than Igor Mitoraj, a Polish sculptor best known in Poland for Eros Bendato – the bandaged head lying near the Cloth Hall in Kraków, where nearly every tourist takes a photo.
Spacerując po Parco della Neapolis (Parku Archeologicznym Neapolis) na Sycylii, natknęłam się na przepiękne, klasyczne rzeźby idealnie wkomponowane w przestrzeń parku. Rzeźby te zwróciły moją uwagę, ponieważ wydawały mi się znajome. Chyba już je gdzieś widziałam: zwłaszcza owinięte jakby bandażem głowy… Przy bliższych oględzinach okazało się, że ich autorem jest nie kto inny niż Igor Mitoraj, polski rzeźbiarz, którego rozpoznawalnym w Polsce dziełem jest Eros Spętany, czyli leżąca w pobliżu Sukiennic w Krakowie, owinięta bandażem głowa, przy której prawie każdy turysta robi sobie zdjęcie.

The Sicilian exhibition I had the chance to admire was organized ten years after the artist’s death. The sculptures that Maestro Mitoraj left behind are numerous, crafted from various materials and in different sizes. His work was inspired by classical sculptures and their fragments. The figures are usually nude, dressed only in bandages. A more attentive viewer will also notice small niches carved into the bodies, depicting scenes that represent memories and loved ones—something we all carry within us. Some of the faces and bodies are cracked, symbolizing our human fragility.
Sycylijska wystawa, którą miałam okazję podziwiać, została zorganizowana 10 lat po śmierci artysty. Rzeźby, które Maestro Mitoraj pozostawił po sobie, są liczne, wykonane z różnych materiałów i o różnej wielkości. Jego twórczość inspirowana była klasycznymi rzeźbami i ich fragmentami. Postacie są najczęściej nagie, odziane jedynie w bandaże. Bardziej wnikliwy widz dostrzeże też wyrzeźbione w ciałach bohaterów małe wnęki ze scenkami, reprezentujące wspomnienia i ukochanych – coś, co każdy z nas nosi w sobie. Niektóre twarze i ciała są popękane, co ma symbolizować naszą kruchość.
The exhibition was set up in three extraordinary locations: in Ortygia, on the slopes of Mount Etna, and in the Neapolis Archaeological Park. Curator Luca Pizzi emphasized the importance of the dialogue between the sculptures and their surroundings – both natural and historical – which allows visitors to experience a truly unique emotional journey. The exhibition features thirty monumental works that reinterpret classical beauty and explore the condition of modern humanity.
Wystawa została rozmieszczona w trzech niezwykłych lokalizacjach: w Ortygii, na zboczach Etny i w Parku Archeologicznym Neapolis. Kurator Luca Pizzi podkreślał znaczenie dialogu między rzeźbami a przestrzenią – zarówno naturalną, jak i historyczną – który pozwala odwiedzającym przeżyć wyjątkową, emocjonalną podróż. Wystawa prezentuje trzydzieści monumentalnych dzieł, które reinterpretują klasyczne piękno i opowiadają o kondycji współczesnego człowieka.
This extraordinary event, organized by the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis and the Atelier Mitoraj, not only commemorates the legacy of the great sculptor, but also breathes new life into Sicily’s unique sites, blending art, history, and nature in an unforgettable way.
