MALTA – PIERWSZE WRAŻENIA

We’re flying to Malta from Luxembourg. N. is in a good mood. He says he likes going on holiday and exploring new places. He’s looking forward to the flight and shows me all the things we could see in Malta. He says he wants to see as much as possible because he always ends up regretting not seeing something, and then later it turns out that they talked about it in lessons.
There’s a pleasant holiday atmosphere. We have a coffee at the airport and browse the duty-free shop. Finally, it’s time to board and we take off. On board the Luxair flight, we have a tasty breakfast. N. is sitting by the window and has a great view.
We fly along the Italian Peninsula. The sea glistens with tiny waves, barely visible from above. We fly past Sicily and see Mount Etna puffs smoke in the distance. It’s a beautiful sight. We marvel at it and try to capture it in a photograph, but the picture doesn’t even begin to convey what our eyes can see.

Wreszcie boarding i odlot.
Przelatujemy obok Sycylii i oglądamy z góry dymiącą Etnę. To piękny widok.

Etna

We land. The airport is stylish, well maintained and clean. Everything goes smoothly. A transfer is waiting to take us to the hotel. On the way, we notice that traffic in Malta drives on the left. It surprises us a little, but then again – British influence.
Once we get to the hotel, something doesn’t feel quite right. Although it’s a very good hotel and has practically everything you could want, we don’t feel comfortable there yet. Eventually, we escape the hotel and head into town. We walk to the bus stop, which is very close by. The number 13 bus arrives, and it goes all the way to the capital, which is exactly where we want to go. Unfortunately, the card machine isn’t working on the bus, and you have to have the exact fare because the driver doesn’t give change. The ticket costs €5, and all we have is a €20 note. We get off. It’s very hot. And that is, more or less, where our trip together comes to an end.

W końcu uciekamy z hotelu do miasta. Wędrujemy na przystanek autobusowy – jest bardzo blisko. Nadjeżdża trzynastka, która kończy bieg właśnie w stolicy, czyli w miejscu, do którego chcemy dotrzeć. Niestety u kierowcy nie działa płatność kartą, a gotówkę trzeba mieć odliczoną, bo kierowca nie wydaje reszty. Bilet kosztuje 5 euro, a my mamy tylko 20. Wysiadamy. Jest bardzo gorąco. I tu właściwie kończy się nasza wspólna wycieczka.

Malta and Filfla

N. becomes thoroughly downcast. Nothing I say can persuade him or lift him out of his mood. He wants to go home. He no longer wants to see anything or do anything. He falls asleep, and when, after a while, I try to get him out of bed, he snaps at me unpleasantly. So, though sadly, I give up. Not wanting to irritate him any further, I go out into town on my own. Before leaving the hotel, and still clinging to the last scraps of optimism, I book a tour for tomorrow. At least that way, there will be something planned. I have little hope, though, that the tour will actually go ahead.

N. markotnieje. Chce wracać do domu. Zapada w sen, a kiedy po jakimś czasie próbuję wyciągnąć go z łóżka, odburkuje nieprzyjemnie.

Everyone in Malta speaks English, so there’s no problem communicating, buying things or finding your way around. If you speak English, you feel completely at ease and confident here. It’s also very easy to get around by bus. The island is small, so basically nowhere is very far away.

I walk around the area for a while, exploring the districts of St Julian’s (San Ġiljan) and Sliema. I look at the unusual windows – or rather, half-balconies – which are one of the characteristic features of the local architecture. The streets are decorated with something resembling banners or flags, depicting scenes from the life of Mary and various saints. It looks attractive and rather colourful. You can see that religion and tradition are still very much present in everyday life here.

Wygląda to ładnie i dość kolorowo.

I take the bus to Valletta. It drops me more or less right in the centre. I walk around for a while, getting a feel for the layout of the city and preparing myself for tomorrow’s tour, this time with N. – I hope.

Do Valletty dojeżdżam autobusem.
